sick

its official. i have a cold. it started out a few days ago as just a weird sore throat but i wasn't concerned because Shara felt it to. its a full blown cold now. i have a runny nose and sore throat and i can't sleep. got up to blow my nose a few minutes ago and almost stepped on a cockroach barefoot. now there are several mosquitos inside my net. its just not my night! took some benadryl and chugged a nalgene of water though so i should fall asleep soon i hope.

i started another project today. shara did her bible study with the older girls while i helped the little girls make flowers with their hand prints. the older girls will do the same thing tonight and the middle girls tomorrow night. it was pretty messy but lots of fun. i let the girls use paint but I'm going to do the same project with some tent city kids this afternoon but i think ill stick with crayons. not sure how many will be here &paint can get out of control quickly with too many kids.

i also finished organizing and putting away all the craft materials we found last week. ill probably spend the morning taking inventory so when i get back to the states i can figure out what I'm missing &what i need to bring back.

paul and shara went to deli mart and brought me a hamburger from the place above the store. shara thinks they taste different than american burgers. she's probably right but it had ketchup and pickles (which i don't like at all) so i was distracted. ate every bite though. i feel like I'm in college again. ill eat anything you put in front of me as long as its cheap and easy. and i got a coke! yumm.

i have got to learn creole. i am starting to feel bad that i can't talk to the staff. i know how to greet them and ask how they are but thats about it. and when the little girls talk to me i have no clue what they're saying. but some of them know that and are trying to teach me. kimberly is the best at getting me to learn things. she points and tells me how to say it and makes me say it until i pronounce it right.

okay i can feel the benadryl now. bon nwit!
and figure out how to fight off all these mosquitos in my net!

  3. Hey girl...what are we gonna do with those peskie mosquitos? I am glad you have some med's with you! That will make the bug bites feel better too. Haha, I have a feeling you added the "lots of water and taking lots of vitamins" for my benefit - thank you I'll take it:)

When Shara and Paul teach Bible Study, what language do they use? Learning from the children is a fantastic way to speak the language, I would think their vocabulary is building and you can jump on that wagon and learn too! Sounds like Kimberly recognizes your struggle and has a heart to help you learn - that is awesome!

When you do an art activity with the community children, how do you communicate?

What has been your biggest "ah-ha" so far? How about a favorite experience with any of the children? How are they taking to art lessons?

I am loving reading your blog and hope you will continue to pour out your heart in these little paragraphs that connect us from two such different places far far away from one another. Your writing style is so easy to read and the descriptions/details are just fabulous...keep it coming girl!

    Lots of love,
    Mom:)

  4. believe it or not, i actually am drinking a ton of water &taking vitamins! haha shara speaks english with the older girls and kreyol with the middle and younger girls but they all learn memory verses in kreyol. she makes them note cards that have english on one side &kreyol on the other. i asked her to make them for me too! Paul speaks pretty good kreyol with the kids and the neighborhood children know very little english (none apart from "hey you!" or "i love you" etc.)

the girls are also learning french so sometimes its a little hard to figure out which is which. one of the nannies jokingly (but probably kind of serious) told me that i really need to learn kreyol. since she said that I've tried a lot harder to learn words here &there. the older girls are helpful too because they speak pretty good english. if they notice i am struggling with a little one they are quick to help me out. they won't talk to me apart from that but thats okay. it'll just take some time with the teens.

when i do activities, shara and paul give the kids the instructions and i show them how to do things. i know a few words so while they are working on something I'm okay on my own. if i need to say something i don't know in kreyol, i just act it out haha i feel pretty still &the little ones giggle at me but it gets the point across. sometimes.

ill have to think about my biggest "ah-ha" and get back to you. same with a favorite experience. there are lots to choose from. i think they like art lessons okay. haven't done that many yet. its such a process because there are so many of them. i think it will be better and easier when i come back &ill be here for a while.

    love you mommy!
